The volume in cubic meters is the basis of any moving estimate. But how do you estimate it correctly? Here are the methods used by professionals.
Why is the volume so important?
The volume determines:
- The size of the truck needed
- The number of movers required
- The estimated working time
- And thus the final price
An underestimated volume can lead to unpleasant surprises on the moving day: truck too small, a second trip needed, unexpected additional costs.
Method 1: Estimation by room
The simplest method. An average volume is assigned to each type of room:
- Bedroom: 10 to 15 m³
- Living room: 15 to 25 m³
- Kitchen: 8 to 12 m³
- Bathroom: 2 to 4 m³
- Office: 8 to 12 m³
- Basement / attic: 5 to 15 m³ (very variable)
These figures assume standard furniture. Adjust according to your situation.
Calculation examples
2-room apartment (1 bedroom + living room):
Bedroom (12 m³) + Living room (18 m³) + Kitchen (8 m³) + Bathroom (3 m³) = about 40 m³
4-room apartment (3 bedrooms + living room):
3 bedrooms (36 m³) + Living room (20 m³) + Kitchen (10 m³) + 2 bathrooms (6 m³) = about 70 m³
Method 2: Detailed furniture list
More precise, this method involves listing each piece of furniture and large object:
| Item | Estimated volume |
|---|---|
| Double bed | 2 to 3 m³ |
| 2-door wardrobe | 1.5 to 2 m³ |
| 3-seater sofa | 2 to 3 m³ |
| Dining table + 4 chairs | 1.5 to 2 m³ |
| Office | 0.5 to 1 m³ |
| Bookcase | 0.8 to 1.5 m³ |
| Washing machine | 0.5 m³ |
| Refrigerator | 0.5 to 1 m³ |
| Standard box | 0.06 to 0.08 m³ |
Add up the volumes of each item to get the total.
Method 3: The estimation visit
The most reliable method. A professional comes to your home, surveys each room and makes a precise inventory.
This visit also helps identify:
- Access difficulties (stairs, narrow elevator)
- Items requiring special handling
- The needed packing materials
We offer free estimation visits in Geneva and its surroundings.
Mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting the basement and attic: they often contain more than you think
- Underestimating the boxes: an average apartment generates 30 to 60 boxes
- Not counting bulky items: bikes, sports equipment, plants
Which truck for which volume?
To give you an idea:
- 12-15 m³: studio, small 2-room apartment
- 20-25 m³: 2-3 room apartment
- 30-40 m³: 4-room apartment
- 50-60 m³: large house or large family
- 70-90 m³: villa with full basement and attic
Our fleet includes vehicles ranging from 15 m³ to 90 m³, we adapt the truck to your actual volume.
