Every year, thousands of people cross the border to settle on the French side, whether in Annemasse, Divonne, Ferney-Voltaire, or further. Proximity suggests it might be simple. In reality, a few subtleties deserve your attention.
Neighboring France or real France: what’s the difference?
The border area (about 40 km around Geneva) benefits from special rules, especially for cross-border workers. But for moving, the formalities remain the same regardless of your destination in France.
Customs formalities
Even though France is right next door, it is a European Union country. Your goods must therefore be declared at customs.
For a change of residence, your personal effects are exempt from duties if:
- You are permanently leaving Switzerland
- Your goods have belonged to you for more than 6 months
- You are establishing your primary residence in France
The form Cerfa n°10070 must be completed and approved by French customs. We prepare these documents for you.
The special case of cross-border workers
If you work in Geneva and move to nearby France, you become a cross-border worker. This involves:
- Taxation in France (with some exceptions depending on the cantons)
- The choice between French CMU and Swiss LAMal for health insurance
- Specific steps with the URSSAF
These fiscal and social aspects go beyond the framework of moving, but it’s better to anticipate them.
Finding housing in nearby France
The cross-border real estate market is tight. Rents have significantly increased in recent years, driven by the demand from Swiss salaries.
Some tips:
- Compile a strong application (last 3 payslips, employment contract, ID)
- Be responsive: good apartments go quickly
- Expand your search beyond the closest towns to Geneva
Transport: simple but not trivial
The short distance does not exempt one from good organization. Classic difficulties:
- Crossing the border: prepare the documents in advance
- Parking: French city centers often have narrow streets
- Timings: even for 20 km, it takes a full day
Our moving service to France includes all customs formalities and logistic coordination.
Administrative checklist
Before leaving Switzerland:
- Announce your departure to the residents’ control
- Cancel or transfer your insurance
- Inform your bank (some accept clients residing in France, others do not)
- Forward your mail via La Poste
Upon arrival in France:
- Register at the town hall
- Open a French bank account
- Complete health coverage procedures
- Register your vehicle within 3 months
