10 Common Packing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Packing is often the most underestimated part of a move. Yet, this is where the protection of your belongings and efficiency on moving day are at stake. Here are the mistakes we see most often – and how not to make them.

1. Starting too late

The most common mistake. We always think we have enough time, only to end up frantically packing the day before the move.

The solution: Start 4 to 6 weeks ahead. First pack what you don’t use daily: books, decorations, off-season clothing.

2. Using reused boxes

Boxes recovered from the supermarket have already been used. They are weakened, sometimes damp, and their dimensions are not suitable for transport.

The solution: Invest in new moving boxes. They are designed to support weight and stacking, and cost less than a broken item.

3. Overloading boxes

An overloaded box is difficult to carry, risks breaking through the bottom, and slows everyone down.

The golden rule: A box should never exceed 20 kg. Books, dishes, and heavy items go in small boxes. Light items (linen, pillows) in large ones.

4. Not filling empty spaces

In a half-empty box, the contents shift during transport. Items collide and break.

The solution: Fill all spaces with newspaper, bubble wrap, or clothing. When you shake the box slightly, nothing should move inside.

5. Poorly protecting fragile items

Wrapping a glass in a single sheet of newspaper is not enough. It takes several layers and a separation between each item.

For dishes:

  • Wrap each piece individually
  • Place plates vertically (they withstand better this way)
  • Put crumpled paper at the bottom and top of the box
  • Clearly mark “FRAGILE” on all sides

6. Packing things that shouldn’t be

Some items should not be put in moving boxes:

  • Flammable products (aerosols, gasoline, matches)
  • Perishable goods
  • Plants (especially for international moves)
  • Important documents and valuables (to keep with you)

7. Forgetting to label

Dozens of identical boxes and no idea what’s in them. The unpacking nightmare.

The right method:

  • Note the contents and destination room on each box
  • Write on multiple sides (boxes are often stacked)
  • Use a color code for each room if you are organized

8. Not sealing properly

A box closed with a simple overlap of flaps will not hold. It will open at the first movement.

The solution: Use strong packaging tape. Seal the bottom with an “H” shape (one strip in the middle + one on each edge seam). Do the same for the top.

9. Emptying furniture drawers

Counter-intuitive, but emptying all drawers is not always necessary. For dressers and desks, leaving clothes or light items in drawers saves time.

However: Remove heavy, fragile, or spillable items. And secure drawers with stretch film so they don’t open during transport.

10. Doing it all alone when short on time

Packing a 4-room apartment easily represents 2 to 3 days of work. If you don’t have that time, you’ll rush the job.

The alternative: Delegate. Our professional packing service allows everything to be done in one day, with appropriate materials and proven techniques.

In summary

A well-done packing means:

  • Time and anticipation
  • Good materials
  • Method
  • Labeling
