Since Brexit, moving to the United Kingdom has become more complex. New formalities, immigration rules, customs procedures: here’s what has changed and how to properly prepare your move.
What has changed with Brexit
Before 2021, a Swiss citizen could freely settle in the United Kingdom thanks to free movement agreements. Today, it is necessary to have:
- A work visa or another valid residence permit
- Complete customs formalities for your belongings
- Stricter documentation on the origin and value of transported items
The conditions for settling
Swiss citizens now need a visa to live in the United Kingdom. The main options are:
- Skilled Worker Visa: for a qualified job with a British sponsor
- Global Talent Visa: for exceptional talents in certain fields
- Family Visa: to join a family member settled in the UK
- Student Visa: for studies
The procedures are done via the GOV.UK site. Allow several months to obtain your visa.
The transport of your belongings
Crossing the Channel
Two main options:
- Ferry (Calais-Dover, Dunkirk-Dover): the most common for moves
- Eurotunnel: faster but more expensive
The road trip from Geneva to London is about 900 km and takes 10 to 12 hours (excluding crossing).
Customs formalities
This is the most complex point. To import your personal belongings to the United Kingdom, you must:
- Prove that you are transferring your main residence
- Demonstrate that the items have belonged to you for at least 6 months
- Have lived outside the UK for at least 12 months
- Complete a detailed customs declaration
If these conditions are met, your personal effects qualify for the exemption Transfer of Residence (ToR). Otherwise, customs duties and VAT (20%) may apply.
Timelines to anticipate
Moving to the United Kingdom requires more foresight than before:
- Visa: 3 to 8 weeks depending on the type
- Preparation of customs documents: 1 to 2 weeks
- Transport: 3 to 5 days door to door
Ideally, start your procedures 4 to 6 months before the desired date.
Our practical advice
- Make a detailed inventory of everything you take with you, with photos if possible
- Keep proof of purchase for valuable items
- Plan a buffer period between your arrival and that of your belongings
- Check the restrictions: certain products (food, plants) can no longer enter the UK
