Spain attracts hundreds of Swiss each year, charmed by the climate, the cost of living, and the quality of life. But a move to the Iberian Peninsula requires careful planning. Here is everything you need to know to prepare your relocation.
Administrative formalities
For Swiss citizens
Thanks to bilateral agreements, Swiss citizens can freely settle in Spain for more than 3 months, provided that they:
- Have health insurance
- Provide proof of sufficient resources (employment, pension, savings)
- Register at the foreigners registry (Registro Central de Extranjeros)
Within 3 months of your arrival, you must apply for the NIE (Foreigner Identification Number), essential for all administrative procedures in Spain.
Announcement of departure in Switzerland
Don’t forget to deregister from the residents’ control of your Swiss municipality and notify the Swiss consulate in Spain if you wish to retain your rights as a Swiss citizen abroad.
Transporting your belongings
By road: the most common solution
The distance between Geneva and Barcelona is about 650 km, and to Madrid, it’s roughly 1,300 km. Direct road transport remains the most practical and economical solution for a move to Spain.
Advantages of direct transport:
- Your belongings stay in the same truck from departure to arrival
- No transshipment or load breaking
- Short delivery time (2 to 4 days depending on the destination)
Customs formalities
Since Spain is part of the European Union and Switzerland is not, your goods must go through customs. Good news: for a residence transfer, your personal effects are exempt from customs duties and VAT if:
- You have lived in Switzerland for at least 12 months before the move
- The goods have belonged to you for at least 6 months
- You agree not to resell them for 12 months
A residence transfer form must be prepared. Our team handles all these formalities with our agents.
What to do with your vehicle?
You have several options:
- Drive it yourself: the simplest solution for a single vehicle
- Have the vehicle transported: possible but costly
- Sell in Switzerland and buy in Spain: often more economical
If you keep your vehicle, you will have 6 months to register it in Spain. The process involves a technical inspection (ITV) and can be complex for some models.
Settling in Spain: the first steps
Once there, your priorities will be:
- Obtain the NIE: make an appointment at the prefecture or police station
- Open a bank account: the NIE is generally required
- Register for Social Security or take out private insurance
- Register at the municipal padrón: the local population register
Our advice for a smooth move
- Start the process 3 to 4 months before your departure
- Make a detailed inventory of what you’re taking
- Keep receipts for valuable items
- Plan for a few days between your arrival and the truck’s arrival
